Easy Evangelism Opportunities

Hundreds, if not thousands of people are waiting to learn more about the Bible, and YOU can help them!

International Bible Teaching Ministries has people waiting to take an online Bible correspondence course (via email), but they are sorely lacking in volunteers to grade the courses.

These correspondence courses teach people from across the world the truth about God, about the Bible, about the church, and about salvation.  It is a way of helping to spread the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to people across the world.

Please take a moment and consider volunteering to help grade these courses.  There are some volunteers who have over a hundred different students that they work with–in several different countries.  Think about it for a moment.  YOU could be an international missionary without having to leave home.

This is not a difficult task, as you will be provided with the answer key for the courses.  You only have to check their answers and send them the results.

If you want to evangelize and you’re looking for an easy way to do it, please consider this work.  You will have an impact on many lives, and you may even be able to help bring a soul to Christ.  If you don’t believe me, click this and look at the posts on Victor Cross.

For more information, please check out ibtministries.org, or email them at info@IBTMinistries.org.

You will be blessed.

An Update on our Trip

We have been in Canada since this past Saturday evening, and the past seven days have been wonderful.

We have been able to spend time with a small group of Christians who want to serve God and better understand His will for their lives.  We have spent a lot of time in singing and in prayer, and it has been an encouragement both to us and to them.

The church in Riverview, New Brunswick, is currently meeting in the houses of some of the members while their building (a small 125-year-old house converted into a church building) is undergoing major repairs to bring it up to code.

In most of our meetings, we’ve done more of a class format and have discussed the importance of understanding what we are doing/saying in worship (such as singing and praying), making sure that we are doing it according to God’s word, and doing it with the proper heart.  Friday evening, we discussed the importance of evangelism and many shared with us their current evangelism efforts.  We also spent a good deal of time discussing various methods for evangelizing.  It was a very profitable evening, and that was even before the congregation had a finger-food fellowship.

In addition, we have been able to spend a lot of time with the preacher and his family up here.  Stephane (pronounced Stefan) Maillet is very active in online evangelism (see AddedSouls.com for one such example), and has also been trying to help the congregation in New Brunswick to grow.  Our children and their children have been hitting it off great as well.  It will be sad to say goodbye.

We have two more days to go and then we begin our long trek back towards home.  Please pray for our safe return.

Pardon Our Mess

Over the next few weeks, we’re planning on rearranging our website to make it more useful and easier to use.

This includes reorganizing some of our sections (there will soon be a whole section just for FREE stuff), updating pages, eventually having a categorized history of our posts (good if you’re wanting to skim through article titles), and more.

We might even play around with the look of the website (if we happen to find something that we like better and that is still usable).

So, if you happen to stop by TheCobbSix.com and things aren’t as you remember them, don’t worry.  We’re working on it.  🙂

The Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts

It’s been months in the making, but our latest book, The Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts is just about done.  We believe that you will find it to be a worthwhile and valuable resource.

Features:

  • An in-depth look at every passage in Acts which mentions or alludes to the Holy Spirit.
  • Each passage is examined to come to a better understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit as described in the book of Acts.
  • Opposing viewpoints are considered (when such exist) in light of the context of each passage and the book as a whole.
  • No stances are taken on interpretation of a passage without first proving from the Bible that it is the proper one.
  • An appendix on the end of miracles.

This book came about because of the wrangling that is done throughout the church over the issue of the Holy Spirit, His work, and how various passages in Acts are used or misused in an effort to prove each side’s arguments.

Coming in at just over 200 pages, this book is easy to read and understand, but it is in-depth, and backs up its conclusions with careful Bible examination.  Unlike some books which attempt to tell you what to believe on the issue, this one attempts to prove from the Scriptures what the proper belief is.

Issues covered in the book include:

  • Miraculous inspiration
  • Miraculous fulfillment
  • The purposes of miracles
  • The end of miracles
  • To whom does “the gift of the Holy Spirit” of Acts 2:38-39 apply?
  • How was the Holy Spirit a witness for the believers?
  • Prophecy given and fulfilled by the Holy Spirit.

We do hope that you will consider checking the book out.  Look for it (Lord willing) by the end of this month!

Tracing the Restoration Movement (1809-1904)

“Thus saith the Lord” was the cry of the men who preached the ancient gospel.  Their dream was the union of all the religious groups on the foundation of the Bible.  Leaving denominational names, creeds, and doctrines behind, these brave souls went back to the Scriptures and followed only what they could find in its pages.

But not everyone was happy with going back to the Bible.  The brave men of the Restoration Movement had to withstand attacks from denominationalists determined to hold on to their traditions.  Even worse, they had to withstand attacks from their own brethren who thought union was more important than obedience to God’s commands.

This book traces the rise of the “Reformers” of the 1800s, and strikingly illustrates the animosity, sadness, and division that arose when brethren refused to be bound by a “thus saith the Lord.”

DisciplesofChristFRONT COVER

This book was originally penned in 1905, but has undergone a massive overhaul to make it more accurate, more relevant, and more understandable.  Footnotes have been added when needed, and a brand-new final chapter has been added.

The Holy Spirit, Revelation, Restoration, Infant Baptism, and …

There’s a lot to be thankful for–and that’s true all the time!  We’re thankful for you, and the fact that you take the time to read what we’ve posted here.

And now, we’d like to let you know about some things that we’ve been keeping secret!

The Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts

We are over half-way finished writing this book.  It’s been a very rewarding and eye-opening study.  Every passage in the book of Acts that mentions or alludes to the Holy Spirit is examined to see what we can learn about the third person of the Godhead, and how He works.

When keeping all these verses in context, it becomes apparent that several verses have been pulled out of context and used to teach something that they were never intended to teach–even by some of our own good, sound brethren.

Things Which Came to Pass: A Study of Revelation

Over a year ago, well over a thousand hours of work was poured into writing and preaching forty-eight sermons covering the entire book of Revelation.  We are currently in the process of taking those sermon outlines and converting them into a readable book/commentary/study guide so that you can benefit from the study and see what the final book of the Bible meant to the original readers–and what it means to us today.

When preaching these sermons, we also had handouts for the congregation which acted as worksheets to help them see the main points of each section of Revelation.  These handouts (222 pages’ worth) have been collected into a single workbook, and is available here for just $6.99 $5.99 until Christmas!  These workbooks are priced cheap so that any congregations wishing to use them can easily afford to get one for each student.  We know of at least three congregations already who are planning on using this material in the next year.

The David King Collection

You might be asking yourself, “Who is David King?”  But if you were a Christian from England, you’d probably already know the answer to that question.  Many people don’t realize it, but Alexander Campbell worked with David King in a trans-continental way.  In the United States, Campbell was publishing the Millennial Harbinger, while David King was in England publishing the British Millennial Harbinger.

King was a preacher, editor, writer, and debater, yet many Americans haven’t ever been blessed to read his works.  We’re hoping to start the process of remedying that.  We’re just about finished with the final touches of the David King Collection (perhaps the first of multiple volumes, if people want more).  This first collection includes the following:

  • The Primitive Church, the Apostasy, and the Restoration
  • Why Baptize the Little Ones?
  • The History and Mystery of the Christadelphians
  • The Resurrection of Saints and Sinners at the Coming of the Lord

If you’re interested in reading some of these online, we’ve made them available for free at GravelHillchurchofChrist.com.  But for those of you who–like me–would rather hold a real book in your hand, we’re making this available very shortly in paperback!

Scripture Studies, Volumes 1 and 2

Back in 1931 and 1941, Gospel Advocate published two volumes of Scripture Studies, written by S.H. Hall.  These books contained twenty-four lessons each, designed to ground members in the basic truths about the Bible, Jesus, salvation, the church, and fellowship.

These valuable resources have been hard to find for several years, but are now finally back in print–complete with the Cobb Publishing quality you’ve come to know and appreciate.  We’ve made the text easier to read, corrected any mistakes we ran across, and put it all together in one convenient package!

It is a great collection for teaching a Bible class, and your students would benefit from having their own copy of these two classic books in one 362-page collection!  Learn more about it here!

Or, you can read through them at the Gravel Hill website (mentioned above).

So You’re Thinking About Elders

At the request of the elders here, a series of lessons were presented on elders, their responsibilities, their authority, and the qualifications of elders.  It actually ended up covering sixteen weeks, and was very well-received.  We are collecting these sermons and making it into a Bible class book which should be available, Lord willing, by early 2015.

There’s more to come, because this list doesn’t even contain half of the projects currently underway.  But it’s  sampling of some things you can look forward to in the coming months!

Thanks again for reading!

Alexander Campbell: A Collection (Volume 2)

We are proud to announce the latest book from Cobb Publishing is now available!

Campbell(02) FRONT Cover

While about half of the previous volume was about Campbell, with the other half being some of his writings, this volume is almost all him.  There is a very brief biography of Campbell to start off the collection, and then the spotlight shines on Campbell’s pen.

In this brand-new collection, you can read his famous “Sermon on the Law,” get his thoughts on instrumental music in the church, find out what he has to say about the Bible and capital punishment, and even see his own translation of the book of Acts.  This book contains over 300 pages of material for your enjoyment and edification.

We have spent well over 100 hours in selecting, proofreading, and formatting this book to give you the best possible reading experience.  We believe it was worth the effort, and after seeing it, we think you’ll agree!

And may your day be full of God’s blessings!

Restoration Movement – A Sketch of the Life and Labors of Richard McNemar

Cobb Publishing is pleased to announce the latest book in their Restoration Movement collection!

The man who wrote The Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery–and spent days convincing Barton W. Stone to sign it–is largely forgotten.

McNemar Cover

Richard McNemar is an enigma to many students of the Restoration Movement. He shows up as a co-worker with Barton W. Stone, and his name is on one of the most historically significant documents of the Restoration. Yet he is not much more than a footnote in the history books.

However, for those students who want to know more about him, and want to know what happened to him after the Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery, this book is for you.

This is a sad tale of a preacher who had great potential, but who was caught up in false doctrines.

The author of the book (J.P. MacLean) was a historian of the Shakers (publishing several Shaker-related books), and put together this work, originally published in 1905.

This book on the life of Richard McNemar has undergone several editorial changes in spelling, punctuation, and formatting.  Additionally, several footnotes have been added to explain various words and phrases that aren’t familiar to most readers.   There is also a new section added to the end of the book which gives a very brief overview of the history and beliefs of the Shakers.

We do trust, however, that you will find this work, A Sketch of the Life and Labors of Richard McNemar to be interesting, and that it will help you know “the rest of the story.”

News and Updates

First and foremost, we want to say a great big humongous THANK YOU to all of our readers.  This past week was amazing, and it’s thanks to you!

Twelve days ago, we set a new record for our site.  The sermon on Hell was shared on Facebook 35 times, which was the most of anything we’ve ever posted.  I realize that for some websites, that’s a disappointing number, but we’re still growing.

But that didn’t even come close to preparing us for the response to this past Friday’s article on the “thousand year reign of Jesus on earth.”  As of Sunday evening, it had been shared 124 times!  That’s more than three  times the record-setting mark from the week before.

I realize that this information might seem meaningless to you, but it is something that excited us.  We are humbled that so many of you found that article helpful and worth sharing.  So, all of this is to say this:

Thank you.

We’ve also got a lot of new readers the past couple weeks (probably due to those two articles), and we’d like to take a moment to tell you about the other good things you’ll find on our website.

Bible Q&A

Our Friday Bible Q&A articles seem to be people’s favorites.  We try to answer each question sent our way in a logical, easy-to-understand way, but most importantly in a biblical way.  All of our Bible Q&A articles can be read here (or by clicking “Bible Q&A” at the top of our website).

Cobb Publishing

In addition to writing articles, we also produce a lot of books.  We’ve got books about the Restoration Movement, debate books, sermon collections, as well as our own line of in-depth but easy-to-understand commentaries.  These books are available in paperback and eBook format (and if you use Kindle, they’re all available at Amazon.com too).  Click on “shop” at the top of the page to see everything we’ve got available.

We’ve got a few projects currently in production that we hope will be worth the wait, The Holy Spirit in the Book of Acts, Alexander Campbell: A Collection (Volume 2), as well as others.

The Cobb Kids Audio Show

If you like to smile, then check out the Cobb Kids Audio Show.  Our four kids (and some other relatives) had put together several episodes of their own home-made “old time radio show.”  Complete with sound effects, laugh tracks, and (sort of) commercials, these shows are guaranteed to make you smile.

The Book of Revelation

Over a thousand hours of work went into putting together this collection of 48 sermons covering the entire book of Revelation.  The first three lessons, which introduce the study, can be downloaded from our Revelation page.  After reading them, if you want, you can purchase the entire collection (with powerpoints and handouts) for less than $10.  In fact, until the end of the month, it’s only $5.00.

Bible Study Helps

If you use e-Sword, then you’ll want to check out our exclusive e-Sword files.  And if you want more, go to the Gravel Hill church of Christ website (which we also take care of).

And there’s plenty more.  Just take a few minutes and look around!

Thank you once more.  We truly appreciate you.

-Bradley Cobb
