A Modern Plea for Ancient Truths

It’s Tuesday, which means another book being added to the Jimmie Beller Memorial eLibrary (you do know about it, right?).

This book seeks to summarize the “Restoration Plea” in an easy to understand way, and points out areas in which the plea is made.

  1. A Plea for Unity
  2. A Plea for Liberty
  3. A Plea for Loyalty
  4. A Plea for New Testament Evangelism
  5. A Plea for Progress
  6. A Plea for Love

The author of this book, J.H. Garrison, was co-editor of the Christian-Evangelist along with B.W. Johnson, then took sole ownership when Johnson died.  Garrison went on to become a leading voice for the “progressive” (i.e., “liberal”) element of the church.

There are some good thoughts throughout this book, but as always, make sure you compare what is said with God’s word, because Garrison misses the mark some as well (especially in chapter 5).

This book will challenge you.

And you can download it by clicking the link below

The Model Church

Sometimes, when people realize that I’ve made a lot of old brotherhood books available again (electronically and in print), they send me requests.  “Do you have this book?”  “Can you make this book available?”  And I think it’s great!  One of the ones that I get the most requests for is today’s addition to the Jimmie Beller Memorial eLibrary:

The Model Church by G.C. Brewer.

Here’s why: It is a good, succinct description of elders (and their qualifications), deacons (and their qualifications), and reverential worship in the church.

Having said that, brother Brewer did take the position in the book that female deacons were probably acceptable–so while there’s a lot in the book we agree with, there’s also that part that we don’t (we wrote an article that dealt somewhat with this here).  As always, compare everything with the word of God.

Here’s the chapters, to help give you an idea:

  1. What Constitutes A Congregation
  2. The Qualifications of an Elder
  3. The Duties of the Elders
  4. The Relation of the Overseen to the Overseer
  5. How Elders Are Made
  6. How Elders Are Unmade
  7. The Diaconate
  8. Dealing with the Disorderly
  9. Figuring on the Finances
  10. Church Music
  11. A Model Church
  12. Prayer-Meeting Topics

Because of the continual requests for this book, we are making it available in the Jimmie Beller Memorial eLibrary, but also in print for those who want to use it in their Bible classes or personal study.

The Torch of Truth

We here at the Cobb Six strive to bring you interesting reading.  Whether its one of our own articles, part of our book on the Apostles (still in process), or new additions to the Jimmie Beller Memorial eLibrary, we hope that you find what we send out to be worthwhile.

Before we tell you about today’s new freebies, can we make a request?  If you know of someone who you think would enjoy the material we are making available, please feel free to tell them about us, or send us their email address so that they can receive each new post via email (we don’t do anything else with the email addresses at all, and never will).  Our subscription form isn’t working for some reason (isn’t technology wonderful?), so we have to enter the email addresses in manually.

Thank you in advance.

Now for something totally different

Back in 2010, I wrote a short story for our three little girls, who at the time were 5, 6, and 8 years old.  Little did I realize how much they would enjoy that home-made book.  Here we are, five years later, and they still read it and reference it quite frequently.

It’s a story called “The Princess of Goodweather.”

Yep, there it is.  I’ve said it.  I wrote a story about a princess.  But at the same time, it’s also a story about what’s truly important in choosing a spouse (my girls didn’t ever realize I had some ulterior motives…).  It’s a story that shows it is what is inside that counts, and not what is outside.

There’s humor, there’s a sword fight, there’s a clumsy king who keeps getting hurt (who seems far too much like me…), and there’s a truly egotistical bad guy named Heese Vane.

As a surprise for our children, this book is now published professionally!  (and the cover art was done by them)

Princess of Goodweather (FRONT)

But there’s more!

This year (also as a surprise to our children), I wrote a sequel!  Shhh…don’t tell our kids.  They don’t know yet.

It’s called “Return to Goodweather.”

It’s a story that contains action (more sword-fighting!), intrigue, mystery, redemption, and humor.  It’s also a story that shows the need to put principles into practice.  You get to see love, hospitality, and forgiveness all put into practice.

Plus you get to read about the preacher’s “Killer” beef stew, the use of a frog to remove skunk-stink, and two men who have returned to Goodweather to “make things right.”

These books are fun little reads (Book one is 32 pages, Book two is 104 pages) which we think you’d enjoy.  If you’re looking for some good, clean reading material for your children (or grandchildren), we think these would fit the bill.  They are both written where a third or fourth grader could easily read it, but they’re also quite enjoyable for adults (especially if they’re reading them to children).

These books are now available on our website, or you can purchase them at Amazon.com.

Any orders placed this week will be delivered in time for Christmas

An Apology

The past week, I’ve been rather sick and unable to do much of anything.  It’s not fun, let me tell you.  But we also went most of the week without a single update to the website.

But starting Monday, we will try to make up for it by presenting a new FREE book each day (Monday through Friday) for your reading and studying.

Each of them has to do with the theme of defending the accuracy of the Bible against the claims of skeptics.

I enjoyed reading them, and I think you will too!

So, keep checking back with us!

Two New Sisters in Christ!!!

This isn’t an article.  I just thought I’d make that clear from the outset.  But I know you’ll want to read it anyway.

Just after Bible study, Savannah (our daughter) told me that she wanted to be baptized, and she didn’t want to wait any longer.  She said she needed to be saved, she didn’t want to go to the “bad place,” and she wanted to have her sins washed away.  She also added that she wanted to make sure that when she died, she’d be able to be with her mom and dad forever.

As she was getting ready, Deserae (also our daughter) decided that she was tired of waiting and worrying about her soul.  She confessed that she has sinned, that she knew it was sin, and that she needed to be forgiven by God for her sins.  She said “I need to be saved.”

So just a few minutes later, I had the joyful pleasure of immersing both of them into Jesus Christ.

The Holy Spirit and the Word of God

I’m assuming you’ve all already seen this post from a couple days ago, so you know about the new Jimmie Beller Memorial eLibrary.  If not, click on the link and read about it.  We’ll wait for you.

Among Jimmie’s many books was a copy of “The Spirit and the Word: A Treatise on the Holy Spirit in Light of a Rational Interpretation of the Word of Truth” by Z.T. Sweeney.  I think it’d have been better titled simply “The Holy Spirit and the Word of God,” but I wasn’t around a hundred years ago when it was written.

This book is all about the Holy Spirit, His work, and His indwelling in the Christian.

Chapters

  1. The Spirit in the Old Testament
  2. The Spirit in the New Testament
  3. The Personality and Divinity of the Spirit
  4. The Spirit and John the Baptist
  5. The Spirit and Jesus
  6. The Spirit and the Apostles
  7. The Spirit and the Apostolic Church
  8. The Spirit and the World
  9. The Spirit and the Christian
  10. The Parting Word (Blasphemy against the Spirit, Fruits of the Spirit, The Spirit of God at Work Today)

This book contains a list of every verse in which the Holy Spirit is mentioned, which is very handy.

For those who are interested in the Holy Spirit, and especially His indwelling in the Christian, this book is for you.  It will make you think.

The Spirit and the Word (Z.T. Sweeney)

The Jimmie Beller Memorial eLibrary

Let me quickly tell you about a man named Jimmie Beller.  From the first day that I stepped into the building of the congregation here in McLoud, Jimmie was one of my best friends and biggest supporters.  He always had a smile on his lips, was always happy to see you, and was a great encouragement.

He was also fighting against cancer.

The cancer Jimmie had was incurable, and I can’t tell you how many experimental treatments they tried on him to keep it at bay.  But earlier this year, Jimmie went on to his eternal reward.  I (along with everyone who knew him) still misses him greatly.

But Jimmie’s legacy still lives on.

He discovered that I run the Gravel Hill church of Christ website, and absolutely loved the sheer amount of free material that is available there.  In fact, he loved it so much that he allowed me to scan several books from his own library to put online.  One of those books was very brittle, and I told him that I couldn’t scan it because it would destroy the book.  His response was classic Jimmie Beller: “So, destroy one book so thousands of people can read it.  I don’t see the problem.”

After his passing, his entire library was donated to me with the hope that Jimmie’s desire of spreading useful books to as many people as possible would continue.  Special thanks to Robbie, Jamie, and Jeremie Beller for their immense kindness in making those books available to me.

It is today that we announce the creation of the Jimmie Beller Memorial eLibrary.

The books contained in this free eLibrary have all been scanned, completely reformatted, proofread, and “prettied up” so that you can have a better and easier reading experience.

If you’ve been following our posts the past few weeks, you’ve already seen the first two books:

Both Sides of the Music Question (A Debate)

The Eldership (M.M. Davis)

The Newest Addition to the Library

In 1947, Howard Hilliard (H.H.) Gray, a black brother from Dallas, TX, wrote a book titled “The Music of the New Testament Church.”  I only mention that he was a black brother because that helps explain some of the things he says in the book.  He dedicates it to the “White churches of Christ in Dallas” who helped support his preaching work and who made it possible to get the book published.  He also mentions things which were common in the “colored churches.”

H.H. Gray was led to the Lord by his wife just over six months after they were married.  Within a year, he preached his first sermon in Haskell, Oklahoma.  In 1939, they moved to Dallas to work with the Lawrence and Marder congregation, and rapidly brought people to the Lord.

It is a book that is worth your time to download and read.  It deals with the issue of instrumental music, but it is much more than a book on that topic.  You will find it interesting and even challenging in some areas.

From the Jimmie Beller Library, we now present the latest addition.  Simply click on the link below to read it, or right-click the link and select “save target as.”

How You can Help

If you would like to help this eLibrary grow quickly, we would welcome your participation.

First, please share this post with your friends, family, and brethren through email, Facebook, Twitter, or whatever other means you would like.  Jimmie’s desire was for as many people as possible to be blessed by these books.

Second, we are in need of proofreaders.  We can quickly scan these books, but we want the final product to look nice (and not like a cheap photocopy of an old book).  The real time-consuming part of getting these books ready is reading through them to catch the punctuation and typographical errors.  If you would be willing to aid us by proofreading, please contact us.
